    Chiral charge-density-waves

    We discovered the chirality of charge density waves (CDW) in 1T-TiSe2_2 by using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and optical ellipsometry. We found that the CDW intensity becomes Ia1:Ia2:Ia3=1:0.7±0.1:0.5±0.1I{a_1}:I{a_2}:I{a_3} = 1:0.7 \pm 0.1:0.5 \pm 0.1, where IaiIa_i (i =1, 2, 3) is the amplitude of the tunnelling current contributed by the CDWs. There were two states, in which the three intensity peaks of the CDW decrease \textit{clockwise} and \textit{anticlockwise} when we index each nesting vector in order of intensity in the Fourier transformation of the STM images. The chirality in CDW results in the three-fold symmetry breaking. Macroscopically, two-fold symmetry was indeed observed in optical measurement. We propose the new generalized CDW chirality H_{CDW} \equiv {\boldmath q_1} \cdot ({\boldmath q_2}\times {\boldmath q_3}), where {\boldmath q_i} are the nesting vectors, which is independent of the symmetry of components. The nonzero HCDWH_{CDW} - the triple-{\boldmath q} vectors do not exist in an identical plane in the reciprocal space - should induce a real-space chirality in CDW system.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

    Solving inverse problems of unknown contaminant source in groundwater-river integrated systems using a surrogate transport model based optimization

    The paper presents a new approach to identify the unknown characteristics (release history and location) of contaminant sources in groundwater, starting from a few concentration observations at monitoring points. An inverse method that combines the forward model and an optimization algorithm is presented. To speed up the computation, the transfer function theory is applied to create a surrogate transport forward model. The performance of the developed approach is evaluated on two case studies (literature and a new one) under different scenarios and measurement error conditions. The literature case study regards a heterogeneous confined aquifer, while the proposed case study was never investigated before, it involves an aquifer-river integrated flow and transport system. In this case, the groundwater contaminant originated from a damaged tank, migrates to a river through the aquifer. The approach, starting from few concentration observations monitored at a downstream river cross-section, accurately estimates the release history at a groundwater contaminant source, even in presence of noise on observations. Moreover, the results show that the methodology is very fast, and can solve the inverse problem in much less computation time in comparison with other existing approaches

    Elastic theory of ring-(or cylinder-)shaped crystals is constructed and the generation of edge dislocations due to geometrical frustration caused by the bending is studied.     I modelli numerici surrogati per la gestione delle falde acquifere

    SOMMARIO. Nella memoria si tratta dei modelli surrogati applicati in problemi riguardanti le falde acquifere. I modelli surrogati sono metodi di soluzione che, nel tentativo di velocizzare i tempi di calcolo, derogano dalla completa descrizione della fisica e dal dettaglio spazio‐temporale del problema. I modelli surrogati possono essere suddivisi in tre grandi categorie: 1) Modelli surrogati data‐driven che consistono di empiriche approssimazioni dei risultati del modello completo i cui parametri sono calibrati cercando l’accordo con i dati disponibili, siano essi di tipo storico o forniti da un modello completo; 2) Modelli di tipo Projection‐based che, con un processo algebrico, procedono a ridurre l’ordine del sistema risolutivo rendendo quindi piĂč veloce la soluzione numerica; 3) Modelli surrogati detti a multifidelity in cui si deroga dal dettaglio spaziale e si bilancia la ridotta accuratezza con una tecnica multiscala. La memoria presenta infine un esempio applicativo di un modello di tipo multi‐fidelity che analizza le relazioni di correlazione tra i livelli piezometrici in diversi pozzi della regione Emilia‐Romagna (Italia) e gli indici climatici SPI e SPEI. Le relazioni ottenute sono successivamente utilizzate per ricavare una stima degli effetti del cambiamento climatico in piĂč orizzonti temporali a breve (2016‐2035), medio (2046‐2060) e lungo termine (2081‐2100)

    Superconducting properties of [BaCuO_x]_2/[CaCuO_2]_n artificial structures with ultrathick CaCuO_2 blocks

    The electrical transport properties of [BaCuO_x]_2/[CaCuO_2]_n (CBCCO-2xn)underdoped high temperature superconducting superlattices grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition have been investigated. Starting from the optimally doped CBCCO-2x2 superlattice, having three CuO_2 planes and T_c around 80 K, we have systematically increased the number n up to 15 moving toward the underdoped region and hence decreasing T_c. For n>11 the artificial structures are no longer superconducting, as expected, for a uniformly distributed charge carriers density inside the conducting block layer. The sheet resistance of such artificial structures (n nearly equal to 11) turns out to be quite temperature independent and close to the 2D quantum resistance 26 kOhm. A further increase of the number of CuO_2 planes results in an insulator-type dependence of R(T) in the wide range of temperatures from room temperature to 1 K. The value of the sheet resistance separating the Superconducting and the Insulating regimes supports the fermionic scenario of the Superconductor-Insulator transition in these systems.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures.     Definition of the role of chromosome 9p21 in sporadic melanoma through genetic analysis of primary tumours and their metastases

    Malignant melanoma (MM) is thought to arise by sequential accumulation of genetic alterations in normal melanocytes. Previous cytogenetic and molecular studies indicated the 9p21 as the chromosomal region involved in MM pathogenesis. In addition to the CDKN genes (p16/CDKN2A, p15/CDKN2B and p19ARF, frequently inactivated in familial MM), widely reported data suggested the presence within this region of other melanoma susceptibility gene(s). To clearly assess the role of the 9p21 region in sporadic melanoma, we evaluated the presence of microsatellite instability (MSI) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in primary tumours as well as in synchronous or asynchronous metastases obtained from the same MM patients, using 9 polymorphic markers from a 17-cM region at 9p21. LOH and MSI were found in 27 (41%) and 11 (17%), respectively, out of 66 primary tumours analysed. In corresponding 58 metastases, MSI was found at higher rate (22; 38%), whereas a quite identical pattern of allelic deletions with 27 (47%) LOH+ cases were observed. Although the CDKN locus was mostly affected by LOH, an additional region of common allelic deletion corresponding to marker D9S171 was also identified. No significant statistical correlation between any 9p21 genetic alteration (LOH, MSI or both) and clinicopathological parameters was observed. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

    Cohexisting Medullary and Papillary Thyroid Cancer

    Purpose: Papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs) and medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTCs) have always been considered different in terms of their incidence rates, cell origins, and histopathological features. Simultaneous occurrence of both disease entities is very rare. Methods: We describe a series of cases with simultaneous MTC and PTC occurrences in the thyroid gland. Results: From 2,897 patients (mean age, 49.2±12.5; 81% women) who underwent thyroidectomy for cancer between 2000 and 2015, we reviewed 11 cases of simultaneous occurrence of MTCs and PTCs. Multifocal PTC with simultaneous MTC was detected in 5 of the 11 cases (45%). Of these PTC patients, 2 had 2 foci, 2 had 3 foci, and 1 had 4 foci. There was 1 case of multifocal MTC with solitary PTC. One patient presented with “composite thyroid carcinoma” with mixed features of MTCs and PTCs. Eight patients (72%) presented an association with diffuse lymphocytic thyroiditis. The sizes of the tumors were 1.95±0.23 cm vs. 1.20±0.20 cm for PTCs and MTCs, respectively (P=0.531). The prevalence of extrathyroidal extension was 33.1% vs. 30.2% for PTCs and MTCs, respectively (P=0.282). All patients underwent total thyroidectomy and central neck node dissection. Radio iodine was delivered to 44% of patients. Follow-up review revealed 9 disease-free patients and 1 with local neck recurrence, while 1 patient died due to non-thyroid reasons. Conclusion: There are only 30 reports describing a total of 50 cases in the English literature regarding concurrent PTC and MTC in the same gland. This study represents one of the largest case series. Whether the incidence of another cancer in these patients is coincidental, or due to the possible activation of a common tumorigenic pathway for both follicular and parafollicular thyroid cells, remains to be elucidated

    Suppression of 2D superconductivity by the magnetic field: quantum corrections vs superconductor-insulator transition

    Magnetotransport of superconducting Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4+y} (NdCeCuO) films is studied in the temperature interval 0.3-30 K. The microscopic theory of the quantum corrections to conductivity, both in the Cooper and in the diffusion channels, qualitatively describes the main features of the experiment including the negative magnetoresistance in the high field limit. Comparison with the model of the field-induced superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is included and a crossover between these two theoretical approaches is discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.
